DescriptionThe whole story▼
Six point four kilograms, and 10.8 horsepower. On a retro roadster that is a startling pair of numbers — the Z900RS looks like a 1970s motorcycle, and Kawasaki's standard header assembly weighs like one too: 9.6 kg of steel with the catalytic converter inside.
Key Features
- 3.2 kg against the standard 9.6 kg: 6.4 kg and 66.7 per cent less
- 10.8 PS more at 8,600 rpm, peak output rising from 101.6 to 112.3 PS
- 6.5 Nm more at 2,900 rpm — the gain runs through the whole rev range
- Built from perfectly welded high-grade stainless steel tubes
- Compatible with the Kawasaki centre stand
- Turns the Slip-On Line into a full system
- No road approval — circuit use only
Gain at Both Ends of the Range
Most headers find their power high up and give something away at the bottom. This one adds 6.5 Nm at 2,900 rpm and 10.8 PS at 8,600 — Akrapovic states the increase runs through the entire rev range, and the two measured points bear that out.
On a Z900RS that matters. It is a motorcycle ridden at moderate revs on back roads more than it is revved out, and a header that only worked above eight thousand would be the wrong part for it.
Where 6.4 Kilograms Were Hiding
Kawasaki hides the Z900RS's exhaust plumbing well: the visible silencer is compact and the rest disappears under the engine. What is under there is 9.6 kg of double-skinned steel with a large catalytic converter, sized for Euro noise and emissions limits on a 948 cc four.
Removing two thirds of that changes the motorcycle's centre of gravity as well as its total mass, because all of it sits low and central.
The Centre Stand Stays
Kawasaki's centre stand is a common accessory on the Z900RS, and headers routinely foul it. This one does not — Akrapovic states the system is compatible, so chain maintenance stays as easy as it was.
What You Need Alongside It
This header is not a complete exhaust. It converts an Akrapovic Slip-On Line into a full system — for the Z900RS that is S-K9SO5-HBAVTBL for the 2018 to 2025 machines. Akrapovic also notes that special mapping is needed for the best performance, throttle response and durability.
Not the Same Part as the Z900
The Z900RS and the Z900 share a 948 cc engine but not an exhaust. Kawasaki routes the RS differently to suit the retro bodywork and the twin-shock look, so the header for one will not go on the other.
If you are shopping by engine capacity rather than by model name, this is where it goes wrong. Check the model, not the displacement.
