DescriptionThe whole story▼
Titanium crash bars with a German ABE. Both halves of that sentence are unusual: protection bars are almost always steel, and aftermarket bars almost never come with a general operating permit. This set is Akrapovic's first product of its kind, and it carries both.
Key Features
- 3.88 kg, around 40 per cent lighter than a comparable steel set
- ABE — a German general operating permit, no individual inspection needed
- Sandblasted titanium, TIG welded, with 8 mm laser-cut and machined flanges
- No restriction on lean angle
- Mounting points for auxiliary bags, fog lights and spotlights
- Fits the R 1250 GS and the R 1250 GS Adventure
- About an hour to fit
The Adventure Fits, and That Matters
Akrapovic states that this lower set also fits the R 1250 GS Adventure. That is worth reading carefully, because the upper set from the same range does not — the two bars have opposite compatibility, and an Adventure owner who orders the pair will end up with one part that cannot be fitted.
If you are building up a full cage on an Adventure, this is the half that works.
Why Titanium on a Crash Bar
A protection bar spends its life doing nothing, until the one moment it does everything. Steel is the obvious material and it works. Titanium does the same job at roughly 60 per cent of the mass and does not corrode where the powder coat gets chipped by gravel.
On a GS that is loaded to its limit for a long trip, one and a half kilograms back is one and a half kilograms of luggage. And the bars sit low and wide, which is exactly where a tall motorcycle least wants weight.
What ABE Means Here
An Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis is a general operating permit issued for the German market. With one, the part can be fitted and ridden without an individual inspection and without an entry in the vehicle documents.
Most of the exhaust parts in this catalogue carry an EC or ECE type approval instead, which is a different instrument. This set genuinely has the ABE, and Akrapovic records it as such.
Eight Millimetre Flanges
The mounting flanges are laser cut from 8 mm plate and then machined. That thickness is the part of the design that decides whether the bars transfer an impact into the chassis or tear out of it.
Akrapovic states that the construction is partly fixed to the chassis so that an impact is distributed through the bars rather than concentrated at one mounting point, and that the design was evaluated through repeated tests and deformation analysis.
No Lean Angle Lost
Some protection bars sit far enough out that they touch down before the footpegs. Akrapovic states there is no restriction on lean angle with this set, which means a GS ridden hard on a mountain road is not limited by the thing that is meant to protect it.
Somewhere to Bolt Things
The bars take auxiliary bags and fog or spot lights. On a travel bike that is half the reason people fit a cage at all — a crash bar is also the only rigid structure forward of the tank that will hold a light.
An Hour, and a Word of Advice
Sixty minutes of workshop time. The flanges bolt to existing chassis points, so nothing needs drilling, but the torque figures on frame fasteners matter more than usual here. Have it done properly.
Road Approval
ABE, the German general operating permit. No entry in the vehicle documents and no individual inspection required.
