A driver waiting at a side road sees you at roughly their own eye height, through a windscreen and past an A-pillar: at the level of your jaw and shoulders. The top of a helmet is frequently the part they never see at all. Bright colour at the base of the shell sits in the band of vision that is actually used, and it is moving against the background — which is what triggers detection in peripheral vision far more reliably than brightness alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFluorescent pigments absorb ultraviolet and re-emit it as visible light, so they return more visible energy than falls on them. That is why they appear to glow on an overcast day — precisely the conditions in which a motorcycle is hardest to pick out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd the limit: there is no UV at night, so fluorescence does nothing after dark. Retroreflective material on your jacket does the night-time work.
