A woven filter is essentially a plane: threads crossing in one layer, with the openings between them doing the work. A non-woven is a mat with depth, and depth changes how much an element can take in before it starts to close up. That is the quiet reason Sprint Filter puts this medium down for dust, everyday use and long distance rather than for short bursts. On a Goan Classic 350 the CM231P14 is less a finer version of the standard panel than a differently shaped reserve: a volume in which grit can settle instead of standing immediately in the way of the next lungful of air.
Key Features
- Special non-woven medium, used dry, rated 14 microns at 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Positioned by Sprint Filter for dusty conditions, everyday riding and long-distance work
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements, in the series airbox
- Never oiled, so there is no film to renew and nothing to be drawn towards the throttle body
- Goes in place of the standard panel with no alteration to the box and no remap
- Reusable for the life of the motorcycle, with two years of warranty from purchase
Depth as a reserve
Every filter loses flow as it fills, and the question is how quickly. Much of that answer has to do with where the collected load can go. A structure with thickness spreads what it catches through itself instead of stacking all of it against one face, so resistance climbs more gently for the same quantity of dirt. This is a matter of interval length rather than of peak anything. It shows up as a longer stretch of riding in which nothing much has changed, not as something you could feel on any single day.
Distance, and what it is worth giving up
The trade is stated openly: the 1,800 l/m²/sec of this medium sits well under the 5,050 of the standard woven element, and the finer rating is paid for out of flow. On a touring day that is rarely the limiting factor for a 350 single; on a clean commute it buys very little. It buys no power in any case, because a drop-in filter does not make a standard 350 single noticeably stronger, and a description that claims otherwise has stopped describing a filter.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is ever oiled. Ordinary service means compressed air from the clean side of the CM231P14, directed outwards so the load leaves the way it arrived. Where a season has left more than air can move, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until it runs clear. Dry it completely in open air, well away from heaters and flame, and refit it untreated. Downloads holds the maintenance sheet.
