The two dust elements Sprint Filter catalogues for this airbox differ in exactly one recorded respect, and the price list follows that difference. This one carries a hundred per cent more filtering surface; it is listed at roughly seven-tenths more than the standard-size version. Twice the material for well under twice the outlay is an unusual shape for a motorcycle part, and it is worth working out what makes it so — and what has to be true of your riding before the arithmetic means anything.

Why the proportions come out that way

Because most of what you are paying for is not the mat. The frame, the seal, the tooling, the packaging and the paperwork are the same on both versions; only the amount of material in the middle has moved. That is why doubling the surface adds well under half again to the figure, and it is a reasonable way to read the whole Sprint Filter proposition, where the element is bought once and cleaned indefinitely rather than replaced at each service.

Where the arithmetic stops working

At the point where you would never have reached the end of the standard element anyway. Capacity is only converted into value by loading, and a roadster covering clean sealed roads and coming home to a dry garage may go years without filling the smaller version. Buying twice as much of something you were not using up is not a saving, however the figures look on paper. And to be plain about the other temptation: none of this is power. An element in an unmodified airbox leaves a standard R 1250 R exactly as strong as it was, and a bigger one leaves it exactly as strong again.

Care and cleaning

Take the element out, put an air line on the side that faces the engine and work outwards until the surface is open again — that is the service, start to finish, and the only one this part needs in ordinary use. Where road film has left something the air no longer moves, hand-warm water and a trace of mild detergent lift it and the mat is rinsed through until the water stays clean.
