Nothing on this motorcycle joins the rider's wrist to a throttle plate. The M 1000 XR takes a request through a sensor and lets its electronics decide what the plates do about it, with the riding mode, the traction and wheelie strategies and the gear engaged all sitting between the asking and the answer. For a part sold on flow that matters: the state in which 15,000 l/m²/sec is redeemed cannot simply be requested. It is granted, briefly, when the machine agrees — and on a tall, faired thousand with luggage mounts it is granted rarely.
Key Features
- Polyester woven in a single layer and kept permanently dry: no oil new, none after a wash
- Aperture 85 µm, rated flow 15,000 l/m²/sec — Sprint Filter's racing specification
- Holds 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles in Sprint Filter's own comparison
- Around double the working surface of other performance media
- Straight exchange for the factory panel: the box stays sealed, the map as written
- Washed and used again for as long as the motorcycle lasts, two years of guarantee
Wide open is a permission, not a movement
Between the grip and the intake sits a computer with other priorities: lean angle, front wheel, rear grip, the mode chosen at the last set of lights. In the lower gears the plates open progressively whatever the wrist does, and on the road the situations where full opening is both permitted and useful are counted in seconds a year. The aperture of a filter, by contrast, is a permanent property — it is 85 µm every minute the engine turns.
The way a loaded sport tourer works
Add a pillion, a set of cases and a week of luggage and the demand shifts in the direction that makes flow least relevant: more torque asked for at moderate revs, sustained part-throttle at cruising speed, hills climbed a gear higher. None of that comes near the airflow ceiling, and none of it can be improved by an element in an unmodified box — no drop-in filter makes a series motorcycle noticeably quicker. What a dry, reusable panel offers is duller: one consumable brought back to its starting restriction rather than bought again.
Care and cleaning
The everyday method for the PM171S F1-85 needs an air line and nothing more, held to the clean side and blown outwards through the weave so dirt leaves the way it entered. Where a tour has left something greasier than dust, lukewarm water and mild detergent deal with it, rinsing until the water is clear. Then it dries fully in open moving air, with no heat gun and no flame at any stage, and returns to the box dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW M 1000 XR from 2021 to 2026, fitted in place of the paper panel with nothing modified. The XR runs its whole production span on this part number, which is not true of every name sharing the element: the S 1000 RR is split at 2019 and the S 1000 XR at 2020, with the earlier bikes on PM93S, while the M 1000 RR ends in 2024 and continues on PM278S. Five machines are covered here, each with its own years in the Fitment tab.
