Nearly every XDiavel V4 on the road is still inside its first year, which makes this the one period when the intake genuinely needs nothing — and the best possible moment to decide how it will be looked after later. A washable element arrives without an interval attached to it. What it arrives with is a routine, and a routine is either established the first time it is carried out or it is never established at all.

A part with no interval of its own

Everything else on the machine tells you when to attend to it: a number in the book, a light on the dash, a noise. This does not, and the absence is easy to mistake for permission. Sprint Filter design PM160S to remain in the motorcycle for its working life, which is a statement about the fabric rather than about the dust that passes through it — the cloth will outlast the bike, and it will do so in whatever condition its owner leaves it in.

Making the first cleaning easy

Attach it to something already in the diary: the first annual service, or the weekend the bike is put away. Take the element out, put an air line through it from the clean side, look at it, put it back. Ten minutes, once, and after that it is simply what one does with this motorcycle. The element is tolerant — it will not punish a year of being ignored — and that tolerance is exactly why the habit has to be deliberate rather than prompted. What it will not do, at any point, is add power to a standard V4; the airbox was never the restriction.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air directed at the clean face and worked outward is the whole of ordinary service. Where the weave has taken up more than air can shift, wash it in hand-warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water leaves clear, then dry it right through in air — a heater, a hot-air gun or a flame will ruin it beyond recovery.
