Suspension From the Dashboard
The S let its Öhlins be adjusted through the display rather than with a screwdriver. Every one of those inputs passes through the left-hand block, which is why it works harder on an S than on a base bike.
ABS With an Off Switch
Ducati fitted a multi-mode Bosch system including fully disabled, at a point when other manufacturers were making that steadily harder. It was aimed squarely at people who took the bike to circuits.
Black, Red or Titanium
All three grown into the surface layer of the metal. Titanium sits closest to the S's gold fork legs without attempting to match them, which usually looks better than an approximate match does.
Where a Terminal Corrodes
Behind a moulded cover, once water has reached it and stayed through a winter. The button above it is generally still fine when the function stops answering reliably.
One Block of Ergal
Machined rather than injection moulded, with the elements sealed inside. There is no seam anywhere in the body, which removes the route the moisture was taking.
Cold Hands
A winter glove removes most of what a rider learns from a switch. Machined geometry restores enough of it that an input can be made without confirming it visually afterwards.
Forged Wheels
The S's Marchesini rims took rotating mass out of a motorcycle already at 164 kilograms dry. The steering became lighter still, which on a bike this focused was arguably unnecessary.
Factory Connector
Pre-wired, nothing spliced. The old block unplugs, this one plugs in, and the dashboard behaves exactly as it did before.
Data Logging Included
The S recorded channels to a memory key without any accessory being fitted. In 2012 that was genuinely unusual on a road motorcycle and it says a great deal about who Ducati thought was buying one.
