DescriptionThe whole story▼
This set does not fit the R 1250 GS Adventure. Akrapovic says so in the first line of its own fitment notice, and it is the opposite of what the matching lower set does — so anybody buying both halves for an Adventure needs to know before, not after.
Key Features
- Fits the standard R 1250 GS only, not the Adventure
- 2.38 kg of sandblasted titanium
- ABE — a German general operating permit
- Welded to racing-exhaust standard, on machined 8 mm mounting plates
- Roughly two fifths under the mass of an equivalent steel set
- Takes spotlights, fog lamps and strap-on bags
- An hour of workshop time
Upper and Lower Are Two Purchases
Akrapovic splits the protection into an upper and a lower set, sold separately. The upper bars guard the tank and the cylinder head area; the lower ones take the engine and the sump.
Most owners want both. On a standard GS that works. On an Adventure only the lower set can be fitted, and this page exists partly to stop that order going out wrong.
Why the Adventure Is Different
The R 1250 GS Adventure carries a 30 litre tank against the standard bike's 20, and the bodywork around it is a different shape. Upper bars have to follow that shape closely to be any use, and a set designed around the smaller tank simply will not go on.
The lower bars sit below all of that and are unaffected, which is why the compatibility differs between the two halves.
Two and a Bit Kilograms
2.38 kg for the pair. That is what titanium buys — Akrapovic gives the saving over a comparable steel set as around 40 per cent, and on a motorcycle that is regularly loaded past 250 kg, weight taken high up near the tank counts for more than the number suggests.
A German Permit, Not a Type Approval
An ABE comes with the set. Under that permit the bars may be fitted and ridden with no visit to a Prüfer and nothing written into the registration document.
It is a stronger position than most aftermarket protection parts manage, and it is one of the reasons this set costs what it does.
The Welding Is the Product
Titanium tube is unforgiving to weld — it needs shielding gas on both sides of the joint and it shows every mistake. These bars come out of the same shop as the racing exhausts, and their mounting plates are cut to 8 mm and machined afterwards for fit.
Part of the structure anchors into the chassis, which spreads a hit across the whole assembly instead of loading one bracket with it. Akrapovic reports repeated testing and deformation analysis behind that layout.
Lights and Luggage
Upper bars are the natural place for spotlights on a GS: high enough to throw usefully far, rigid enough not to shake. Auxiliary bags can also be strapped to them, which is where most riders put tools and a first aid kit.
Sixty Minutes
An hour of workshop time, bolting to existing chassis points. As with any frame-mounted part, the torque values matter; a bar that works loose is worse than no bar at all.
Road Approval
Covered by an ABE. Neither a Prüfer visit nor a document entry is required.
