DescriptionThe whole story▼

Why the Standard Unit Is So Heavy
Kawasaki gave the Z1000 a twin-outlet silencer with the collector box built into it, sitting under the tail. Everything the Euro 4 rules demanded went into that one assembly, and 7.4 kg is what that costs.
The Akrapovic replacement does none of the emissions work, which is why it weighs one kilogram and why it carries no approval. The two facts are the same fact.
Two Very Different Motorcycles
The Z1000 is a naked roadster with aggressive styling and no wind protection. The Z1000SX — sold as the Ninja 1000 in some markets — is a faired sports tourer with luggage mounts and a screen. They share this silencer across 2014 to 2020.
On an SX used for touring the missing approval is a heavier objection than on a Z1000 taken to trackdays. Worth weighing before ordering.
Six Kilograms From Behind the Axle
The silencer sits under the tail, behind the rear wheel spindle. Mass in that position resists changes of direction more than the same weight anywhere else on the motorcycle, so 6.4 kg from there is worth considerably more than the number alone suggests.
An Insert in the Package
A removable noise insert ships with the silencer. With it fitted the exhaust is considerably quieter — useful at a circuit with a static sound check. Removed, it is at its loudest. Neither state is road legal.
An Older Kawasaki
The Z1000 and Z1000SX of these years are used motorcycles today, past their steepest depreciation. That changes the calculation on a track-only silencer: there is less resale value at risk, and the bikes are more likely to see a circuit than a showroom.
The SM Prefix
Most Akrapovic slip-ons carry an S- part number. This one begins SM-, which marks it as a silencer supplied without the link pipe section some systems include. It fits Kawasaki's standard mid-pipe directly.
Seven Model Years
Kawasaki built the Z1000 and Z1000SX with this exhaust mounting from 2014 to 2020, across a mid-cycle update that changed the bodywork but not the tail section. One silencer covers the whole run of both machines.
Titanium, Not Carbon
The whole silencer is titanium, with no carbon end cap. On a part mounted under the tail where it catches spray off the rear wheel, that is the more durable answer — and it is where the single kilogram comes from.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
