DescriptionThe whole story▼
This is not a weight-saving part, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The standard silencer weighs 5.19 kg, this one weighs 5.14 kg — fifty grams, one per cent. What it does deliver is 4 Nm at 3,650 rpm and 1.8 PS at 3,600, which on a shaft-driven tourer is the band you sit in all day.
Key Features
- 4.0 Nm more at 3,650 rpm and 1.8 PS (1.3 kW) more at 3,600 rpm
- Peak output rises from 128.7 to 130.0 PS
- Peak torque is unchanged at 136.6 Nm — the gain is in the curve, not at its top
- Titanium muffler outer sleeve with carbon fibre parts
- Compatible with the BMW side cases, so a fully equipped RT stays equipped
- Thirty minutes to fit, removable noise insert supplied
- Weight saving: 0.05 kg. That is the honest figure and it is not the reason to buy this.
Where 4 Newton Metres at 3,650 rpm Go
An R 1250 RT is geared long and ridden in top gear on motorways and fast roads, usually with luggage and often with a passenger. At legal speeds in sixth the ShiftCam boxer sits close to 3,500 rpm, and that is precisely where this system adds its torque.
The effect is in how the bike responds to the throttle without a downshift — overtaking, climbing a gradient with a full load. It is a small change in a place a tourer uses constantly, which is worth more than a larger change somewhere the bike rarely goes.
Why the Weight Barely Moves
BMW's standard RT silencer is already a relatively light unit, and the Akrapovic replacement has to keep the same acoustic volume and the same catalytic hardware to stay within the type approval. The titanium sleeve buys back only what the shape gives up. Fifty grams is the result, and inflating it into a percentage would be a way of hiding it rather than reporting it.
Everything Stays Bolted On
The RT is a full-dress tourer and most of them wear BMW's side cases permanently. This silencer is dimensioned around them, so nothing has to come off. The header and catalytic converter stay standard, no remapping is required, and the original unit refits in half an hour.
Why We Publish the 0.05 Kilograms
It would be easy to leave the weight out of this page. Every other Akrapovic listing leads with a percentage, and one per cent is not a number anyone wants to print. But an RT owner comparing exhausts deserves to know that this one is not the way to make the motorcycle lighter — there is no lighter version of this part, and a system that saved real weight would have to give up either the acoustic volume or the emissions hardware, and with it the type approval.
What you are buying is the torque at 3,650 rpm, the sound of a boxer that the standard silencer holds back, and titanium and carbon in place of a painted steel box. That is a fair proposition, stated plainly.
