The dust that matters to an engine is not the dust anyone can see. Grit, chaff and insects are stopped by any element in reasonable condition; what wears a bore and a ring pack is the fine mineral fraction, light enough to hang in the air over an unsealed road long after the vehicle ahead has disappeared. The Honda CB400X is the machine in this family most likely to be pointed at that kind of road — upright, tall-barred, bought by people who take the gravel shortcut across the valley instead of the sealed loop around it. The Sprint Filter P14 CM220P14 is built for that fraction specifically: a dry non-woven medium filtering to 14 microns, where the standard P08 works at 80.
Key Features
- No oil in the medium at all, so a hot-film sensor or a throttle body never sees anything carried off it
- Short of the T12, this is the finest medium Sprint Filter offers: 14 micron filtration at 1,800 l/m²/sec
- The filtering surface is about double what other performance elements present
- A direct replacement in the standard CB400X airbox — nothing modified, nothing remapped
- Compressed air for routine cleaning, water when called for, and the same element back in indefinitely
- Designed for the life of the motorcycle and covered for two years
Particle size, not particle quantity
Two filters can pass the same weight of dust in a season and do entirely different amounts of damage, because damage tracks particle size rather than mass. The coarse material is caught everywhere and matters least. The fine material is what reaches the cylinder, and it is exactly the range where the gap between 80 microns and 14 microns is decided. That is the whole argument for the P14 on a bike used off the tarmac: not that it filters more, but that it filters smaller, and smaller is where the wear happens.
The part of the bargain nobody mentions
A finer medium loads sooner. It has to — it is catching material that a coarser weave would have let through, and that material has to go somewhere. So the P14 asks for the compressor more often than a P08 would in the same airbox, and on a CB400X ridden regularly on dry gravel that means looking at it at every service rather than every second one. The compensation is that looking at it costs nothing: the element comes out, gets blown through and goes back in. Nothing is consumed, nothing is ordered, and the CM220P14 that came out is the same one that goes back.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, applied from the clean side and worked outwards, handles almost everything a dusty summer leaves behind. What it will not shift comes out with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it in open air, never with heat and never with a flame, and refit it dry — the medium works dry and stays unoiled for its whole life. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda CB400X from 2019 to 2026. The CM220P14 covers six machines across Honda's 400 and 500 twin range from one shared airbox design; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
