A small airbox is a small budget, and nothing an owner does will make it bigger. Whatever element goes into the Exciter has to do all of its filtering inside the outline the standard housing allows. This is the reason the Sprint Filter P08 PM186S is built the way it is: the same fitted shape, but with roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters folded into it. No air filter makes a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and this one does not either. What surface buys is margin — a lower intake resistance to begin with, and a slower, flatter rise in that resistance across the service interval.
Key Features
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters, inside the standard outline
- P08 polyester, dry from first fitting to last — no oil to carry downstream
- 80 microns of filtration at 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- A straight swap for the original element: no airbox work, no remap, homologation as it was
- Cleaned with compressed air and used again
- Two years of warranty, counted from the purchase date
Surface is the quantity that is actually scarce
Read the flow figure carefully and it explains itself: 5,050 litres per square metre per second is a rate per unit of area, so the air a filter can pass is that rate multiplied by how much area there is. The only variable left is how much medium has been packed into the space available, and that is where the doubled surface goes. The dust a filter collects is spread across its whole area, so twice the area means each square millimetre carries half the load for the same distance ridden — which is why the resistance curve stays flatter for longer.
Why the extra area is worth having on a dry weave
Sprint Filter's comparison measured the dry P08 holding back 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter. The P08 achieves it through the weave itself, spun from polyester threads of 22 microns and upwards, and generous area is what keeps that weave from becoming a restriction. Where conditions genuinely demand a finer medium, Sprint Filter make them — the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns, the P14 at 14 — and each finer step gives up flow, the P14 passing 1,800 litres per square metre per second. For a road-going Exciter the P08 sits at the sensible end of that trade.
Care and cleaning
Aim compressed air at the clean side of the PM186S and drive it outwards; that is the normal service. Should more be called for, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will handle it, rinsed through until the water runs clear. Let the element stand in open air until every part of it is dry — never over heat, never near a flame — and fit it dry. No oiling follows, since the polyester has never been oiled. The Downloads tab holds the Sprint Filter maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Exciter, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186S element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
