The 400 exists to fit inside a licence category, and that is worth thinking about before you choose a service part. An engine built to a power ceiling has already given up whatever margin it had — there is no surplus waiting in reserve, so anything that quietly takes a little away is felt rather than absorbed. A filter that has loaded over a service interval is exactly that kind of quiet subtraction. The Sprint Filter P08 CM61S replaces the paper element with a dry polyester medium of roughly double the filtering surface, in the standard airbox, with nothing modified.

Nothing spare on a licence-limited engine

A 399 cc air-cooled twin makes its case on tractability rather than output. It is used in the middle, in traffic, on the pull away from lights — transient work, where the engine asks for a step change in airflow and the intake either supplies it promptly or lags. Because the pressure drop across a filter rises with flow rather than staying constant, a partly loaded element costs most at exactly that moment. On a larger engine the loss disappears into the surplus. Here there is none.

A first Ducati, kept a long time

Bikes bought to fit a licence tend to be kept past the point where the licence stops mattering. This element is cleaned rather than replaced — compressed air at most services, water when a winter has earned it, back in dry. Sprint Filter designs the P08 to last the life of the motorcycle, so the filter is a single purchase rather than a recurring line on every invoice.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry; there is no oiling step.
