Why an Exhaust Maker Sells a Cover
Because the people who buy a six-hundred-euro titanium silencer are the people who care what the motorcycle looks like standing still. A cover is the cheapest thing that protects it, and putting a Spark mark on one is a small piece of loyalty that costs the owner nothing extra.
It is a merchandise article rather than a technical one, and it is worth saying so plainly.
What a Cover Actually Does
Three things. It keeps dust and bird lime off paint and off a polished exhaust, which matters more than it sounds: both etch a finish if they are left. It keeps direct sunlight off plastics and seat material, which is what makes an eight-year-old fairing look sixteen. And it makes the machine anonymous, which is not nothing on a street.
Universal Fit, and Its Limits
A universal cover is cut generously enough to go over most machines. On a large tourer with a top box it will be tight; on a small naked it will be loose and will flap in wind, which over a season abrades paint at every point it touches.
Where a cover has slack, tie it down. A loose cover is worse for a finish than no cover at all.
Never Over a Hot Exhaust
This applies to every motorcycle cover ever made and it is worth repeating on the page of one sold by an exhaust manufacturer. A silencer straight off a ride is well above the temperature at which cover fabric melts, and the mark it leaves is permanent on both.
Let the machine stand until the exhaust can be held in the hand before the cover goes on.
Indoors or Out
A cover on a machine stored outdoors traps moisture against it as readily as it keeps rain off, and a motorcycle that is never allowed to dry corrodes faster under a cover than in the open. Outdoor storage wants ventilation at the bottom and a machine that goes under the cover dry.
Indoors, in a garage, against dust and daylight, is where a cover does its best work.
What Spark Does Not Publish
Dimensions, material, and whether the cover is water-resistant or merely dust-proof. We are not going to invent any of those. If those details decide your purchase, ask us before you order and we will put the question to Spark.
