DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm
  • 84 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01092-31

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 170 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
