DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01095-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 01095-21
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 90 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 180 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Dimensions

At 180 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
