DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21041-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- 77 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 21041-21
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 51 mm
- Free length 150 mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
The Numbers That Matter
The 51 mm bore and 150 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 75 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 75 N/mm
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.
Fitting
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
