DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-12 is a shock absorber spring rated at 56 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01096-12
  • 103 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 56 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 190 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 56 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 56 N/mm

From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
