DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06773-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 40 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06773-07
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 217 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 40 N/mm
  • Free length 370 mm

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 70 mm × 370 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 40 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Fitting

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
