DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01103-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 103 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01103-54
  • Free length 240 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 240 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 140 N/mm.

Choosing 140 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
