Nine Hundred and Ninety-Eight Cubic Centimetres
Ducati shortened the Stradale's stroke to bring it under the World Superbike limit. The R makes 221 hp with the racing exhaust and revs to 16.500, which is grand prix territory.
Titanium Rods and a Dry Clutch
The R carries titanium connecting rods, a lighter crank and a dry clutch that Ducati had abandoned everywhere else. It is a homologation motorcycle that happens to be road legal.
Aerodynamics That Work
The R's winglets were developed for the racing bike and produce measurable downforce well below its top speed. On a motorcycle with this much power, keeping the front wheel loaded is not a styling exercise.
Just the Housing
This replaces the throttle assembly and leaves the switchgear alone. On an R, where almost everything else has already been specified upward, it is one of the few remaining plastic components.
Precision at the Grip
The sensor reads a tube turning in a bore. Cut on a machine, that bore stays round and stays the right size, which on a bike calibrated as carefully as the R is worth having.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface. Against carbon panels and a great deal of exposed metal, black is the choice that recedes.
Ergal 7075
Roughly twice the yield strength of ordinary machined aluminium. On an R that will see circuits and occasional gravel, the material choice is a practical one.
Homologation, Properly Done
Ducati built the R to win a world championship rather than to satisfy a marketing department. Every one of the changes from the standard V4 has a competition reason behind it.
