The Superleggera's Sibling
Ducati built 500 Superleggeras on this platform with a carbon frame and carbon wheels. The R is the closest thing most people will own to one and it shares a great deal more than the badge.
Titanium Rods
Along with a lightened crank and two-ring pistons. The R's engine is a homologation special and Ducati charged accordingly, because that is what those materials cost.
A Universal Clamp
The slots accept the original master cylinder and the radial aftermarket units. An R owner has usually changed something at the lever end already and this part does not care which.
Three Finishes
Black, red and titanium, all grown into the aluminium electrochemically. Against carbon panels and raw titanium fasteners, the titanium option reads as another finished surface rather than a colour.
Where Water Gets In
Not through the button but along the seam between two moulded halves. A body cut from one block does not have one, which is most of what separates a ten-year part from a five-year one.
Elements Sealed Inside
The contacts are enclosed within the machined body rather than tucked behind a clipped lid. A bike washed with a hot jet after every session finds the lid every time.
Twelve Thousand Revs From a Twin
The R's ceiling was higher than most inline fours of its generation. It is what the 112 millimetre bore existed for and why the engine needed the titanium to survive it.
Ducati's Own Connector
Pre-wired, so nothing is spliced. On a homologation motorcycle likely to be kept rather than used up, an unmodified loom is worth more than it costs.
Adjustable in Places Road Bikes Are Not
Rear ride height and swingarm pivot position can both be changed on the R. These are paddock adjustments that exist because the motorcycle was built to be homologated, and almost nobody outside a racing team has ever moved either of them.
