DescriptionThe whole story▼
Five point six kilograms off a motorcycle that weighs 340 kg fully fuelled sounds like rounding. It is not. The standard exhaust on the K 1600 B is a 14 kg assembly slung low and wide behind the rear axle, and taking 40 per cent of it away changes how the bagger falls into a corner and how it feels being walked backwards out of a parking space.
Key Features
- 8.4 kg against the standard 14.0 kg: 5.6 kg gone, a 40 per cent reduction
- 3.4 PS (2.5 kW) more at 8,050 rpm, with peak output rising to 138.6 PS
- Black-coated silencers, in the finish the B was designed around rather than a bright pipe fighting the bodywork
- Titanium construction with carbon fibre outlet caps and carbon fibre heat shields
- Compatible with the BMW side cases, which on a bagger is not optional
- Sound tuned specifically for the six-cylinder engine over long distances
- EC and ECE type approved
What a Bagger Needs From an Exhaust
The K 1600 B is the low, long version of BMW's six-cylinder tourer: dropped rear end, fixed hard bags, a stance built to look right standing still. Anything bolted to it has to work with that shape rather than interrupt it, which is why these silencers are black-coated rather than polished and why the carbon caps sit flush instead of protruding.
The bags are the harder constraint. A K 1600 B without its side cases is not the motorcycle anybody bought, and a silencer that fouls the mounting turns the bike into something else. This system is dimensioned around the BMW cases and they stay on.
Weight, Where It Actually Counts
On a light sportbike a kilogram is a talking point. On a 340 kg tourer it is only worth discussing when there is enough of it, and 5.6 kg is enough — roughly the weight of a full tank of the bike's own coolant and oil, removed from the lowest, widest, furthest-back point of the machine. That is the exact mass that has to be lifted every time the bike leaves upright.
One Thing to Know
No removable noise insert is supplied with this system. The sound level is what these silencers produce as built — type approved at that level, so entirely legal, but there is no quiet setting to fit for an early start.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-B16SO3-HRAATBL covers the BMW K 1600 B Bagger from model year 2017 through 2020. Installation is quoted at 60 minutes, which reflects a pair of silencers rather than one and the bag hardware that has to come away first. For the K 1600 GT and GTL the corresponding part is S-B16SO4-HZAAT.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval, with the certificates supplied and downloadable here. The silencers are legal replacement parts for road use in the European Union.
