On an unfaired motorcycle there is very little between the outside world and the airbox: a side panel, a duct, and then the element. The Kawasaki Z400 carries no fairing to divert spray, no screen to lift the air over the tank, and its intake sits in the same moving column of road air that the rider is sitting in. That matters less for what arrives than for what happens next, because a damp element and a dusty element are not two separate problems. Grit carried in road spray dries into the medium, and what dries into paper stays there. The Sprint Filter P14 PM164P14 is dry non-woven, filtering to 14 microns, and it is designed to be washed rather than replaced.
Key Features
- Washable and reusable — compressed air is the routine, water the exception
- Dry non-woven, never oiled: nothing to wash out and nothing to reapply
- 14 microns of filtration; air flow 1,800 l/m²/sec
- The filtering surface is roughly double that of other performance filters
- Direct replacement in the standard Z400 airbox — no modification, no remap
- Warranty of two years; the element is designed to last the life of the motorcycle
Why washing is a feature and not a repair
Paper is a single-use material that happens to survive a while. It takes on water, it swells, its structure changes, and once it has dried out again it is not the element it started as. A dry polyester or non-woven medium is built the opposite way round: washing is an intended part of its life, and it is returned to its original condition rather than nursed towards the end of one. On a bike whose intake sees weather directly, that difference decides whether an element is a consumable or a component.
Nothing added that the intake has to tolerate
The other reason the medium is dry matters on a modern small twin is downstream. Oiled filters work by holding particles in a tacky film, and that film has somewhere to go under a strong enough airflow: throttle bodies, intake sensors, valve stems. The PM164P14 catches by weave alone. There is nothing to migrate, nothing to reapply after a wash, and nothing to get wrong at reassembly — it goes back in dry, the way it came out. What the finer weave buys in exchange for its lower flow is the size range that actually matters: coarse grit is stopped by any element in reasonable condition, while the fine mineral fraction is the part that reaches the bore.
Care and cleaning
On an unfaired bike the element sees weather as well as dust, so the wash gets more use than elsewhere: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, a rinse until the water runs clear. Compressed air from the clean side, outwards, does the work between times, and a dusty spell is reason to repeat it. Drying must not be hurried — fully in air, never with heat and never with a flame — and the element goes back in dry. Nothing is oiled, before or after. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
