The medium is not a decision you make once. Every element in this range is washed and refitted rather than thrown away, which means a second panel is a spare that keeps its value: the 14-micron mat goes in for the dry weeks when the tracks turn to dust, the standard weave goes back in afterwards, and neither of them is consumed while it sits on the shelf. On a bike ridden in seasons, that is a more useful way to think about SM249P14 than as a permanent upgrade.

Two panels, one airbox

Swapping a filter on this machine is a workshop job of minutes, and because both media survive cleaning, keeping one of each is a real strategy rather than a wasteful one. The choice then stops being a compromise between the dusty fortnight and the other eleven months, and becomes a matter of which panel is in the box this week. It also removes the temptation to pick the finest medium available and simply leave it there — which is how riders end up paying a flow penalty for conditions they meet three times a year.

What the fourteen-micron mat is for

Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard weave, this mat trades roughly two thirds of the flow figure for a great deal more retention of what is suspended in dry air. That is a trade and not a ranking: neither medium is the better one in general, only better matched to a given day. Dry gravel, farm tracks, summer dust and riding behind other vehicles are the conditions it is drawn for. And it is not power — in an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard Caballero exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

A nonwoven gives up its load more slowly than a weave, so the SM249P14 is cleaned with patience rather than pressure: compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, then lukewarm water with a mild detergent when air is no longer enough, rinsed until the water runs off clear.
