The F 800 GS badge came back on a bike aimed at riders who leave the tarmac, and loose ground changes which number on a filter matters. Dust is not one size. What a dry track throws up runs from grit you can watch settle to a fine powder that hangs behind the machine ahead and passes straight through anything with a wide enough opening. That is the setting in which this racing medium has to be judged, and it is where its headline figure points away from what the motorcycle is for.
Key Features
- The racing weave of the P08 family: polyester, dry, never treated with oil
- 85 µm between the threads and 15,000 l/m²/sec of rated flow, the top of the flow range
- About twice the working surface of a typical performance element
- Straight exchange for the factory panel — the box stays sealed and standard, the map untouched
- Cleaned with a compressor and refitted; built to stay with the motorcycle
- Two years of guarantee, counted from the day it is bought
Finer is not better, coarser is not worse
Sprint Filter's range is a row of trades, not a ladder. Every medium sets an aperture, and the aperture decides two things at once: what is held back and how easily air moves. The T12 closes to 7 µm and passes 560 litres per square metre per second. The P14 sits at 14 µm and 1,800. The standard P08 opens to 80 µm and 5,050. This one opens further still, to 85 µm, and passes 15,000. None of those is the best. They answer different questions, and the question an off-road F 800 GS puts — how little of that powder reaches the engine — is answered further down the list rather than further up it.
Where the racing weave still earns a place
Two things hold true whatever the aperture. The cloth is dry, so no oil film sits upstream of the sensors and the throttle bodies, and there is no re-oiling step to get wrong at the end of a dusty week. And an open weave gives its dirt back: compressed air clears an 85 µm mesh more completely than it clears a fine one, which is why a racing panel tolerates a schedule of frequent cleaning. If this bike is worked hard on dry, loose surfaces and the airbox comes apart often, that combination has a real argument behind it. If the dust itself is why you are shopping, buy filtration rather than flow: the road-and-track version of this fitment costs a fraction of the racing one.
Care and cleaning
The routine takes minutes: compressed air held against the clean side of the PM188S F1-85 and worked outward until the weave is open again. Whatever the air leaves behind comes out with warm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clean. After that the element dries in air and only in air — no heat source of any kind, no flame anywhere near it — and it returns to the box only when it is dry right through. The maintenance sheet from Sprint Filter is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW F 800 GS of 2023 to 2026, in the series airbox with nothing modified around it. Nine machines share this racing element: the BMW middleweight F models and the Kove 800 X Pro. The full list is under Fitment.
