The 2012–2017 Tiger Explorer is how most riders now get into this family. It is the oldest of the 1200s, it is the most affordable, and it is almost always bought second or third hand with a service book that has gaps in it. A viewing shows you plenty. It does not show you the intake tract, and nobody lifts a seat and pulls a cover to inspect an air filter before money changes hands. The Sprint Filter PM202S closes that particular unknown for good — a dry woven polyester element that is washed and refitted instead of replaced, so the date of the last filter service stops being something you have to take on trust from a stranger.
Key Features
- One woven layer, a calibrated 80 µm aperture, polyester threads of ø 22 microns and up
- Rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec: the standard Sprint Filter medium where road and track use is concerned
- Never oiled and entirely dry, so nothing migrates downstream onto the air sensor or the throttle bodies
- Inside the unmodified airbox sits roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters
- A straight replacement — the airbox is not modified, the map is not touched, homologation stands
- Washable, reusable, built to last the life of the motorcycle, with two years of warranty from the date of purchase
The service item an inspection never reaches
Every other consumable on a decade-old Explorer declares itself somehow. A cellulose air filter tells you nothing about its own history. It can be three years and two owners old and still look presentable from the top, while its restriction has been climbing quietly the whole time. Fitting a washable element resets that clock to a point you chose yourself.
What the part does, and what it does not
A drop-in filter does not make a standard 1200 triple noticeably more powerful. The honest benefit is a low intake restriction that stays where it started. A paper element is a consumable by design: it loads up, its restriction rises steadily between services, and the last stretch before a change is the worst air path the engine ever sees. The P08 medium is returned to its original state with an air line, so the bike breathes in month eleven much as it did in month one. On a heavy shaft-driven tourer that consistency shows up where you actually ride.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does most of it: the line goes on the clean side of the PM202S, works outwards, and the element is back in the airbox in minutes. A hard season justifies the longer version — a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsing carried on until the water runs clear. Either way it dries fully in open air, never with heat and never with a flame, and returns dry. No stage involves oil. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 built from 2012 to 2017. The same PM202S element covers six Tiger Explorer listings in total, spanning the early 1215 machines through to the last 1200s of 2022. Check your own model year against the Fitment tab before ordering, because several designations overlap in these years.
