Öhlins part number 08789-36 is a pair of fork springs rated at 3.6 N/mm, 423 mm long with a 38.2 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 38.2 mm
- 280 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 423 mm
- Supplied as a pair
- Öhlins part number 08789-36
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 3.6 N/mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
The Numbers That Matter
At 423 mm free length and 38.2 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Where This Rate Belongs
A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Fitting
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
