Their purpose on the Scrambler Classic is to be the part that meets the ground first at the rear of the bike, ahead of the swingarm and the axle area, which can make the damage from a fall smaller. They do not make a bike immune to scratches, and after a heavy knock they are renewed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eReading the Camber\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe side stand is on the left, so the direction in which the road falls decides how the bike stands. If the ground drops away on the stand side, the Scrambler Classic leans further onto its stand: stable, though heavier to lift when you leave. If the ground drops away on the right, the bike stands more upright than usual and needs very little to topple over to that side. Before you step off, look at the gutter and work out which way the surface runs. Parking at a right angle to the kerb, with the rear wheel towards it, usually takes the sideways slope out of the equation, and leaving the bike in first gear stops it rolling. Where that is impossible, turn the bars towards the stand and check that the bike really rests on it before you let go. On soft or crumbling edges near the gutter, a stand plate spreads the load.
